Lucknow, January 2: Love knows no boundaries and two women from Uttar Pradesh proved the old adage true. The women tied a knot in a temple on Saturday in Bundelkhand region of Uttar Pradesh. Both the women who hail from Hamirpur district of the state, were separated by forced marriages around six years ago. According to a report published in the Hindustan Times, the registrar has refused to recognise the marriage on the ground that there was no government order on same-sex marriage. The women were met in their college over six years ago. They dropped out from the college after their families came to know about their relationship and forced them to marry.

“Our lawyer has told us that since the Supreme Court has done away with Section 377, we can stay together. No one can trouble us. We have been living together as a couple for some time now,” reported the Hindustan Times quoting one of the women as saying. The women will also challenge registrar’s decision to not to register the marriage. On September 6, in a landmark verdict, the Supreme Court decriminalised homosexuality. In its ruling, the top court struck down section 377 of the Indian Penal Code which criminalises homosexuality. The top court highlighted that homosexuality is no more a crime and that they can enjoy rights like other citizens.
