As per Barlow's GoFundMe page, it is believed that the bacteria originated from a minor leg cut that came into contact with ocean water while she was on her trip to the Bahamas.
The US Army veteran, in an interview with Today, said, "It was so swollen - it was at least three times the size of my left knee. It was really scary. She added, " I was in excruciating pain." Sharing her ordeal, she mentioned that medical professionals initially diagnosed it as a sprain, leading to a prescription for crutches and pain medication. As per the reports, Barlow experienced an abrupt loss of consciousness, collapsing onto the floor just a day after contracting bacteria. Found unconscious by her brother at home, she was swiftly rushed to the hospital. There, she was promptly diagnosed with Septic Shock, plunging her into a two-week-long coma due to the bacteria infiltrating her bloodstream. She showed signs of kidney and liver failure. Barlow had contracted a rare, potentially lethal bacterial infection that results in necrotizing fasciitis, or a "flesh-eating disease," which is believed to be caused primarily by group-A strep, the New York Post reported. Barlow also shared a lengthy post on Instagram about her “near-death experience”.
