A woman named Poonam Khinchi from Mumbai was surprised when she saw her rickshaw rider's well-maintained, brightly pink coloured nails. When she asked her (he likes to be referred as her), she replied, "Didi, Eid ki tayaari kar rahi hoon (I’m preparing for Eid)." Manju earlier worked in a hotel but her sexuality wasn't acceptable. She was fired because of it. She then took up to driving an auto in the city and its been five years, she's at it. She currently lives with her boyfriend. And being gay is not easy and Manju has been through some troubles too, especially late nights. As she mentions, she does not ride post 11 pm as miscreants often pick on her and tease her. But it is indeed brave of Manju to continue doing what she does proudly and has shown the will to fight against all discrimination.
Not every day do we come across such heartwarming stories. Yes, cab drivers and rickshaw drivers do have stories to tell, but Manju's story is surely heartening. It is not easy to beat odds, but standing up against them in a world that describes you odd, requires courage.
