Heading to work every day is a task every morning when you are bound to get stuck in traffic on the way. Traffic has become a part of our commute but if you take the Eastern Express Highway regularly to commute from Thane to Mumbai or back, then you are in for a pleasant surprise. The trees planted at the side of this highway near Vikhroli are blooming in pink flowers, make for a pretty sight. You may have admired the pink cherry blossom scenic roads seen in foreign countries but Mumbai has its very own scenic route blooming amidst all the developmental projects planned ahead.
These flowers are not cherry blossoms but known as Tabebuia in scientific language. They are commonly called as ‘trumpet trees’ and are spread across different parts of the city including Borivali, Powai and a few in Sion and Fort area. The pink ones grown near Vikhroli on the Eastern Express Highway give a pleasant feeling as you drive through. For a keen nature observer, a sight like this in the concrete jungle is no less than heavenly. The pink carpet at a height and blue sky above make for such a lovely combination. People are already admiring and sharing this pretty sight on WhatsApp and Facebook.

In times of developing phases of the metro route, a lot of trees are being cut within the city. There have been protests against taking down of the oldest trees in the city but to no avail, and some of them have already been chopped. In times of the rapid industrialization, it is really worrying that we are losing our trees. But a sight like this on a regular morning is a good realization that we need to plant more such blooming trees across the city. Mumbai is also said to lose a lot of forest cover of the iconic Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP). Quite a few of us dream of visiting other countries to experience the cherry blossoms, but well, Mumbai itself has its own bloom and we should not underestimate it.
