It's the season of Diwali and are you excited for the festivities? The celebration with lights and lanterns sees an exchange of gifts among friends, family members, colleagues and so on. One of the many common gifts of the season is Soanpapdi or Sonpapdi. The flaky sweet dessert box is one of the most obvious choices of Diwali gifting. And it also very common to pass on these boxes from one family to another. Using the same concept, Press Information Bureau has given a new mantra to everyone about fake news. In their latest tweet they ask everyone to forward Soanpapdi and not fake news, adding on a mantra to #BurstFakeNews.

Fake news spreads over social media very easily these days. In fact, people barely authenticate any piece of news they have received over WhatsApp and pass it along. In recent times with Diwali approaching, there have been several such fake news doing the rounds, such as China sending special firecrackers and decorative lights that would spread asthma and eye ailments in India. Or another report of ITBP urging people to not buy Chinese products. Both of these fake reports have been debunked by the government handle, which again brings to the point of not spreading on fake news blindly. So to give the message, they have a mantra of #BurstFakeNews.

People have liked the timely idea to give out an important message. While you may not particularly be a fan of Sonpapdi either, as they mention it is at least sweet. But forwarding fake news and messages purposely can also get you in trouble. So this Diwali let bursting fake news be your motto. At a time when we are already facing a pandemic, let us celebrate the festival happily without creating much panic. Wishing you all happy and safe Diwali 2020!
