India and Pakistan are not on the best of terms and border conflicts make it to news almost every day. But serving hope amongst all the religious differences is this school in Pakistan's Karachi that is conducted inside a Hindu temple. In the Basti Guru area of the southern port city, Ms Anum Agha runs a school. The best part about this school is when she greets her students with a 'Salaam,' they respond with 'Jai Shri Ram.' Anum is dedicated and wants to educate the children about their basic rights and health. The settlement has 80 to 90 Hindu families, closely living together. They are also under the constant threat from land grabbers. But Anum ensures, her good work continues. She holds discussions with the children post her classes. With no other place to teach these students, she did not mind teaching in the main area of the temple. It bears the posters of Hindu deities and there are also Hindu Gods on the perch above. She was quoted to PTI, "Everyone is surprised when I tell them about our school inside this temple but we had no other place to hold our classes when I first started coming here last year." Take a look at the video of the school inside a temple in Pakistan:
The people in the community are constantly facing the atrocities of land grabbers. The area also has communal tensions, given the past history. A certain Muslim resident also propagated to build a mosque over the land of the temple. The authorities had even broken the water and electricity connections in Basti.
Anum's aim is to educate the children irrespective of their religion. Although some Muslims are not happy with her teaching the Hindus, she has over come the difficulties. " I do it because these people are not even aware of their basic rights. Their children want to gain knowledge and education. Some of them attended other schools in the area but faced social and religious issues." She carefully avoids the topics around religion so that she does not hurt any sentiments. "I respect them as human beings and they respect me back. That is how we work. We celebrate religious festivals together. I say salaam to them and they respond with Jai Shri Ram." It is indeed a great example of how people from different communities can peacefully co-exist if there are no interventions. Anum Agha is truly an inspiration, propagating the need for proper education to children at an early.
