For those living in the southern hemisphere, it is the shortest day of the year. A solstice occurs because of the Earth's rotation around the sun on a tilted axis. This day is also called as midsummer.

The beginning of summer is welcomed in different ways in different countries. For some, it is a time of celebration, in some parts it is also associated with certain romantic rituals. In Eastern Europe, solstice celebrations are marked along with a holiday. One of the largest celebrations of the solstice in the world is at Stonehenge, in England, where thousands gather each year to bring in the summer season.
