A bull fighting event in Spain went out of control after the bull entered the spectators stand, injuring several people. The incident took place at the annual festival held in Vidreres near Girona in north-east Spain. Despite efforts, the bull could not be tamed and the police was forced to shoot down the animal to put an end to the menace. The tradition of bullfighting in Spain has existed for centuries. Though animal lovers have pleaded the government of Spain to put an end on the festival by terming it a violation of the animal rights, the plea seemed to have fallen on deaf ears.
Apart from Spain, bullfighting is a practice that is popular in many parts of the world. In the Indian sub-continent, the festival of Jalikattu in the state of Tamil Nadu in India and Maghesakranti in Nepal are the ones which come to mind. Jallikattu has been known to be practiced during and since the Tamil classical period.
It was common among the Ayar people who lived in the 'Mullai' geographical division of the ancient Tamil country, before its modern day avatar. The tradition of Maghesakranti dates back to 1887 B.S. was introduced by then Prince of Bajhang Jay Prithivi Bahadur Singh for entertainment purpose while visiting his maternal uncle's house.
