Mumbai, September 16: A South Korean woman in her 50s has been handed a six-month jail term and a two-year probationary period following her conviction for stalking and harassing her daughter. The harassment took place between December 2021 and May 2022, as outlined in documents from the Daejeon District Court, which reported a total of 306 text messages and 111 phone calls as part of the harassment case.

According to a report in the Independent, the identity of the woman remains undisclosed. At first, the messages were normal and mainly comprised routine inquiries such as recommending Bible readings or inquiring about her daughter's whereabouts. Furthermore, the woman escalated her harassment by engaging in physical stalking, repeatedly dropping unannounced at her daughter's residence and even peering into her home. Despite a police injunction issued in June, the woman trespassed on six additional occasions. The court rejected her claim that these actions were unintentional.

As per the report, the court imposed a six-month prison term on her and mandated that she complete 40 hours of anti-stalking education. Under South Korean law, a person convicted of stalking may face fines of up to 30 million won (approximately Rs 18,78,008) or imprisonment for a maximum of three years. In cases where the offender engages in stalking while carrying a weapon, the penalty escalates to 50 million won (approximately Rs 31,25,083) and a potential five-year prison sentence.
