Temperatures plummeted across Europe and is below normal these days. The British weather forecast is constantly cautioning of bitterly cold winds and snow. Reportedly, this year’s cold spell in Britain is believed to be one of the severest cold weathers in past five years. It is so cold in the United Kingdom that even the snails are hunkering down. So much so, that the most awaited event was postponed – Snail Racing Competition. You heard it right!

The Dartmoor Union Pub in Holbeton, a civil village in England, was forced to postpone its first annual charity snail race, as they discovered that the snail athletes were too slow and sleepy to participate in the competition.

Everything seemed set when the Union Pub’s Manager Donna Aziz called the Plymouth pet shop for the snails; however, she was in a surprise when she was told that the snails are too laid-back to take part in the race.

As per the reports of BBC, the pet-shop owner informed that the cold spell had made them too ‘sluggish’ to be a part of the racing competition. The affair had been planned for several months at the pub; the snail racing championship was supposed to be held on February 24. The money raised in the charity event would be donated to ‘Devon Air Ambulance’ – an organization providing emergency medical services in the county of Devon in Southwest England.

Meanwhile, the pub posted about the cancellation of the event on their Facebook page, promising the fans to host it soon!

It is well known that the snails hibernate, often in large groups, under stones and in trees, during the winter season. The Plymouth pet-shop owner further confirmed that they will wake up when the temperature gets warmer.

For those who are wondering if such type of championship occurs, let us tell you that it does! Every year, World Snail Racing Championships is held at Congham, a village in the English county of Norfolk. But this unique affair happens in the summer season, when the competitors (snails) are a bit lively.
