Shocking! Suicide Video Live-streamed on Chinese Media, While Onlookers Encouraged Her to Jump
The girl's parents have said that the girl was sexually harassed by her teacher in September, following which she was depressed.
Mental health is a growing concern among the young generation and depression remains one of the major problems that need to be tackled. Despite creating awareness and talking about ways to deal with someone who is going through it, it all was on deaf ears in China. A depressed girl going to commit suicide found more supporters to take a leap then help her back. A 19-year-old student surnamed Li jumped from the eighth storey of a building in the city of Qingyang. What is shocking is the entire incident was live-streamed on Chinese video app Kuaishou. The video shows people cheering for her to jump to her death.
The incident ones again bring in light the degrading of social and mental health. Post the video coming online, there are people expressing anguish but the fact that some people clapped and in a way pushed her off the edge is not only shocking but extremely shameful. It was only the rescue workers who were seen distressed. The girl's parents have said that the girl was sexually harassed by her teacher in September, following which she was depressed. The accused had tried to hug and kiss her. The incident led her to multiple suicide attempts.

The girl is dead and it has now become an issue of outrage on social media. People are criticising those who took the video. One of the passersby was heard saying, "How come you haven't jumped yet?" Now according to a Chinese newspaper, police have detained some of the onlookers who were cheering for her. The outrage now will not bring the girl back, but if there were more words of positive encouragement then probably it could have been avoided.
The incident is not just shocking but is totally unreasonable of the onlookers. It shows we are failing as a society in general. There are a lot of cases of depression and social anxiety prevailing around us but the least we can do is not make it worse for them.
