Shashi Tharoor Takes Part in #WaPoOnDeathNotices Trend, Calls Nathuram Godse an ‘Eloquent Defender of Majority Rights’ in Obituary

Indian National Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Monday reacted to the #WaPoOnDeathNotices trend, which was inspired by The Washington Post's headline for an obituary of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Bagdadi calling him an "austere religious scholar".

New Delhi, October 28: Indian National Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Monday reacted to the #WaPoOnDeathNotices trend, which was inspired by The Washington Post's headline for an obituary of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Bagdadi calling him an "austere religious scholar". The Thiruvananthapuram MP said that the #WaPoOnDeathNotices trend is "hilarious" and wrote an obituary headline for Mahatma Gandhi's assassin Nathuram Godse.  #WaPoDeathNotices Trend Online After People Troll Washington Post For Calling ISIS Leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi 'Austere Religious Scholar' in Obituary.

"These #WaPoDeathNotices [inspired by the Washington Post headline for obituary of world's most-wanted terrorist, ISIS founder Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi ] are hilarious! Mine: Nathuram Godse, eloquent defender of majority rights, passes away in suspended animation at 39", Tharoor tweeted. Ismael Al-Ethawi, Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi's Former Top Aide, Was Key to the ISIS Chief's Killing: Iraqi Intelligence Officer.

After the confirmation on Baghdadi's death, the newspaper wrote an obituary by first calling him "Islamic State's terrorist-in chief" and then replacing it by "austere religious scholar at the helm of Islamic state." Following the backlash, the Washington Post dubbed the headline and called him an "extremist leader."

After this, many netizens mocked the newspaper and started trending #WaPoOnDeathNotices on Twitter. Vice President (Communications) and General Manager of Washington Post noted mistake and said, "the headline should have never read that way and they quickly changed it." But in the digital generation, such damages are quite difficult to hide.
