Selfitis: Two Lok Sabha MPs Ask Centre to Suggest Steps to Cure Selfie Addiction Among People in Bihar

Mobile addiction has been a thing of the past now. Today as we have almost every person, irrespective of their age has a cell phone, rather a smartphone and can easily operate one. With the internet also easily accessible, social media has become a familiar pass time. But it is the selfies that have dominated the most. With basic phones also giving a good resolution camera, people began taking selfies, to a level that the term selfitis was coined to state clicking too many selfies as a disorder. Now the habit has reached the Parliamentary discussions. Two Lok Sabha members asked the Centre to suggest steps it was going to take to tackle the selfie disorder. Om Prakash Yadav, a parliamentarian from Bihar, and Harish Dwivedi, MP of Uttar Pradesh also want to get a statistics of how many people in Bihar are suffering from selfitis and how many are seeking therapy. Although the term has been coined in the year 2014, it has not been declared as a disorder yet. "The number of people reporting excessive use of selfie and those who have approached therapists to seek help for the same in the country is not maintained centrally," said Anupriya Patel, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare.
The country has seen many cases of selfie deaths, wherein people have lost their lives while taking selfies, regardless of the surroundings. Uncaring of where they are, people got so involved in clicking their selfies, that they died due to accidents. According to a report in The Washington Post, about 250 people have died worldwide while taking selfies. India has the highest number of 'selfie deaths' in the world in the year 2015. Selfie addiction has become a serious issue, more among the youth, who want to flaunt their risk-taking on social media sites. It may not be declared as a disorder, but the addiction is very much evident.
