Former Member of Parliament, Milind Deora took the Internet by storm to protect the environment he came up with #QuitPlasticMovement. Soon, the hashtag reached to many and netizens began uploading videos and pictures condoning the social media movement. The campaign for plastic ban that will come into force post June 23, residents of Colaba, South Mumbai reportedly collected more than 100 kgs of plastic waste from nearly 170 buildings in A municipal ward during the weekend. The online movement covers A municipal ward which consists parts of For, Ballard Estate, Colaba and Marine Drive, popular spots in Mumbai.

Time and again, environmentalists have pointed out that curbing plastic pollution is the need of the hour. They have stressed on proper disposal of plastic waste. In the recent awareness drive, Hindustan Times reported during last weekend, student volunteers, resident associations and two volunteers provided by the former MP Milind Deora in association with Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), collected more than 100 kgs of waste out of plastic. Aditi Jain, Vice President, Cuffe Parade Residents Association (CPRA) was quoted saying, “We had expected that we will be able to collect more plastic, but because of the rain, we couldn’t reach out to a few lanes.”

However, the residents have requested to conduct another drive soon. Jain revealed that the who objective behind the movement is to ask citizens to initiate similar activities and dispose their waste only after proper segregation.  Kunti Oza, chairperson of Clean Mumbai Foundation said, “We have got a sample of a compartment bag for vegetables. Along with CPRA cleanliness committee, will be getting more made through an NGO, which will be distributed among resident members, and our staff will also be informed about it.” The members of these associations are now being approached by residents of other areas in Mumbai such as Malabar Hill and Nepean Sea Road. This is definitely a positive response that came from the public almost after three months since the Maharashtra State Government notified to ban use of plastics.
