Indian Railways has been witnessing some major changes in its functioning recently. With the Modi-government's digital wave, many of its workings were transferred to its apps and website. Other than which the Railway Board introduced e-catering service where passengers can opt for local cuisine, facilities to sell sanitary pads and condoms at toilet facilities within the railway station premises, buy fresh Alphonso mangoes from 'Food-on-Track' app among many others.
And now contributing to a greener lifestyle, Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation’s (IRCTC) has started fully biodegradable food packages in trains. The facility will be available in four Shatabadi and four Rajadhani trains from Delhi. Railway Minister Piyush Goyal tweeted pictures of the food packs which was "contributing towards a greener planet". A trial run will begin on Tuesday which is World Environment Day, observed by over 100 countries.
Here are the biodegradable packages introduced by Indian Railways:
Hindustan Times quoted an IRCTC officer as saying, "We have changed the packing of the plate and instead of a plastic tray, the food will now be served in disposable plates, which are biodegradable. We are also improving the quality of the catering staff."
Railways are also planning to provide seasonal fruits to passengers on board. Self-help group Shree Mahalakshmi Swayam Sahayata Bachat Ghat known for exporting top-quality mangoes has partnered with Trapigo to deliver the Alphonso mangoes to passengers.
