Waterlogged railway tracks may not be a problem for Mumbai trains anymore, it seems. The Central Railway has developed a locomotive engine which can work even in 12 inches of water. It can also pull local and long-distance trains from waterlogged tracks. Come rains and Mumbai local stop running in no time. Lack of proper drainage system coupled with poor infrastructure always result in Mumbaikars being stuck during heavy rains. However, with this locomotive engine, things may end up being simpler.
The engine can pull trains out of knee-deep water and force the train to stay put until the tracks get cleared. Talking about the new engine, Mumbai Mirror quoted SK Jain, divisional railway manager of Central Railway, Mumbai division said, "Waterlogged tracks maroon local trains and other rolling stock. When the level crosses 4 inches, water enters traction motors at the bottom of the engine. This can cause an 'engine failure'."
To protect the engine from water, its motors will be completely sealed. Also, sensors will constantly monitor the increase in motor temperature. Officials said that the locomotive engine is ready and is currently stationed at the Kurla locomotive shed. The report called the modification "the need of the hour".
He added saying, "The engine will help tackle the recurring problem of trains being brought to a standstill." After the metropolis received heavy rainfall on the weekend, trains were slightly delayed. However, there was no cancellation of trains. IMD has forecast thundershowers marred with winds at many places and heavy rainfall till today.
