Mom Outraged Over Grocery Store's Censorship on 'Summa Cum Laude' as Graduation Cake Message, Read What it Means
Koscinki had written a special message to explain the meaning of the word in the Latin language and placed the order.
Children's graduation is a proud moment for every parent. A mom who wanted to celebrate her son's graduation with a good cake and party was very disappointed with the grocery chain who refused to print her message. The grocery store said the words requested "Summa Cum Laude" had words of profanity. The entire phrase translates to 'with highest phrase.'
Cara Koscinski, of South Carolina posted a rant on Facebook against the Publix store from where she had ordered the cake. Cara's son scored a 4.79 GPA in his graduation, a joyous moment for the family. But it was ruined when the graduation cake message was printed wrong. When Cara requested to write, "Congrats Jacob! Summa Cum Laude class of 2018," she got a message about an issue with her phrase. The computer marked the 'cum,' a Latin word meaning 'with' in English, in "Summa Cum Laude" as a naughty word. It substituted the three lettered word with hyphens. When the cake came, it replaced the word cum with three hyphens, as it had been on the online order.
Koscinki had written a special message to explain the meaning of the word in the Latin language and placed the order. It cost her $70 for the cake and when the family member picked up the cake, they were not aware what was the exact message. Koscinki was obviously humiliated to see the mistake on her son's cake that too in the midst of a celebration.
She then took to Facebook to express the disappointment of the entire episode. She wrote, "How utterly ridiculous ... Shame on you Publix for turning an innocent Latin phrase into a total embarrassment for having to explain to my son and others (including my 70 year old mother) about this joke of a cake." To compensate for it, the store gave her a gift card and also a refund.
Take a look at Cara Koscinski's post on Facebook:
The entire episode may not be as embarrassing to Koscinki as much as it would have been if it was in India. Then the message would be surely considered profanity. After reading this, we can only thank it was not in India.
