Panipat, June 23: In a shocking incident of medical apathy, a 60-yr-old man from Haryana's Panipat, who was declared dead by doctors at Delhi's Ganga Ram hospital, was later found alive while being taken for last rites in an ambulance. Relatives of the man accused the doctors of negligence in performing their duty. According to relatives, they informed the doctors after they found that the man was sweating, then the doctors declared him alive.
However, in the discharge certificate of the 60-yr-old patient from Panipat, Ganga Ram hospital wrote, "Patients' condition is critical & he needs further treatment. Patients' attendants want to discharge patient, hence, he is being discharged on Leave Against Medical Advice (LAMA)."
This is not the first time such type of cases of medical apathy came to limelight. Earlier this week, a government hospital in Maharashtra handed the dead body of a 50-year-old patient Avinash Dadasaheb Bagwade. But later it was found that the hospital authorities handed over wrong dead body to the family, whereas, Bagwade was alive and responding to treatment in the Sangli civil hospital. Last year, one of the two new-born babies who was declared dead by doctors of Max hospital in Delhi had been found alive. Later the baby died due to medical negligence.
In December last year, Delhi government cancelled the license of Shalimar Bagh’s Max hospital for wrongly declaring the 22-week-old premature baby as dead. However, a committee of the Delhi Medical Council (DMC) in its order on May 2 this year said that there were procedural lapses, but no medical negligence at the Shalimar Bagh unit of Max Hospital.
