Maulana Ejaz Arshad Kajmi And SC Advocate Farah Faiz Get Into an Ugly Physical Fight During Triple Talaq Debate on LIVE TV at Zee Hindustan Show (Watch Video)
Faiz in the debate said that the Quran does not recognise triple talaq as a form of divorce.
News debates have changed the way common people watched the news on TV. From yelling, screaming to thrusting opinion down someone's throat, panellists who appear regularly on news debates are quite infamous in the country. A debate on triple talaq telecasted on Zee Hindustan news channel took an ugly turn when one of the male panellists hit a fellow woman guest. In the live debate show, Supreme Court lawyer Farah Faiz hit Maulana Ejaz Arshad Kajmi as discussions heated up. Kajmi responded by hitting Faiz twice live on air. The video has been going viral since then.
Even as the anchor tried to intervene, the two panellists continued their verbal spat on TV. However, the scenario got out of hand and Kajmi hit Faiz on live TV. Faiz in the debate said that the Quran does not recognise triple talaq as a form of divorce. She had also said that Muslim clerics were running a parallel judicial system.
Reportedly during the debate, she said, "The practice of talaq-e-bidat without proper conciliation violates the basic right of every Muslim woman to live with dignity adding that Muslim women have become victims of gender discrimination in the absence of proper codified rules governing marriage, divorce and maintenance."
Here is the video of the incident:
The incident angered everyone on the show and the anchor condemned the incident in strong words. Zee Hindustan filed a complaint and police arrested Kajmi from Zee Media's office. Faiz who runs NGO Muslim Women's Quest for Equality in Uttar Pradesh is also national president (honorary) of the RSS-associated Rashtrawadi Muslim Mahila Sangh.
Following the incident, All India Muslim Personal Law Board tweeted saying, "Mr Ejaz Arshad doesn't represent @AIMPLB_Official. He joins TV debates as an individual. The board never assigned him for the representation. He alone is responsible for his behavior."
The Supreme Court had delivered a landmark verdict with a majority ruled that the practice of divorce through triple talaq among Muslims is "void", "illegal" and "unconstitutional". The court had held that the triple talaq is against the basic tenets of Quran.
