In another horrific incident, a woman from Delhi while doing the selfie stunt at a hill station in Maharashtra died after falling into a 500-ft deep valley. The police officials informed that the 33-year-old woman was on a vacation with her family at Matheran, a neighbour in Raigad district. On June 20, during the evening, the victim Sarita Rammahesh Chouhan visited Louisa Point, where she posed to take a selfie which eventually killed her as she slipped and fell into the valley. Her family members who were stunned witnessing the terrible accident approached the Matheran police.

“Chouhan had come to Matheran, a hill station known for its mild climate and well-preserved colonial architecture, with her husband and three children yesterday,” said Sanjay Patil, Additional Superintendent of Police said. At around 6:30 pm, all the family members visited Louisa Point. Sarita’s body was recovered from the valley during midnight and the post-mortem was conducted at a nearby hospital.

Louisa Point has beautiful views of waterfalls and the ancient Prabal Fort. Reports suggest that many spots in Matheran does not have safety railings and warning signs. Even if there are, they are rusted. There is a total of 36 view points at the hill station which are famous for the visitors which includes Panorama, Siliya, Kind Edward, etc. which have safety issues.

Despite the risk, people engages themselves striving to take the perfect angle and post them on their social media feeds. Over the years, there has been an increase of deaths of individuals while they follow this recent trend of clicking their perfect selfies. According to a data released by the United States of America in 2016 revealed that India has the highest number of people who have died while clicking selfies.

Mumbai specifically have proved to be dangerous for selfie freaks and that is why in 2016, the city banned taking photos of self in 16 zones. Anybody going to those areas will be charged a fine of Rs. 1,200. In fact, the centre in April 2018 had asked all the state governments to identify popular tourist spots where often accidents occur when people take selfies and declaring such as “No-Selfie Zones”.
