Google has honoured Marga Faulstich, a German Glass chemist with a doodle. Celebrating her 103rd birth anniversary, the doodle shows Faulstich surrounded by her inventions. Born on June 16, 1915, in Germany, her family moved to Jena, where she attended high school. After completing graduation, she began her training as a graduate assistant at Schott AG, a leading manufacturer of optical lenses and special techniques in Europe.
In 44 years of her career, she worked on more than 300 types of optical glasses. During her early years, she also worked on the development of thin films. Some of her findings are still used in the manufacture of sunglasses, anti-reflective lenses, and glass facades. She also took interest in lenses and worked on microscopes and binoculars. Faulstich was initially a graduate assistant to technician initially, then a scientific assistant and finally a scientist.
Her fiancee passed away in the second world war after which focussed more on her career. Along with work, she studied chemistry in 1942. After 44 years of working in the same company, Faulstich retired in 1979. She passed away at the age of 82 on February 1, 1998. In 1973, she received international recognition for the invention of the lightweight lens SF 64. After retiring, she travelled to distant places, gave lectures and presentations at glass conferences.
However, she could not finish her studies as the situation changed after Second World Ward. Later she continued her work in a research laboratory for a short period of time. During her work with Schott AG, 40 patents were registered in her name. Faulstich was the first woman executive at Schott AG.
