Mamata Banerjee Plays ‘Hum Hongey Kaamyaab’ on Accordion With Micky Mouse on Frankfurt Street; Watch Video

Frankfurt, Sep 19: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was spotted playing the accordion on the streets of Frankfurt during her Europe tour on Tuesday. People were amazed to see a lady playing “We shall overcome’ in a saree on the streets of Germany. In a video that went viral on social media, the West Bengal Chief Minister is seen standing with the busker dressed as Micky mouse and playing the tune ‘Hum Hongey Kaamyaab’ on the accordion.
However, Mamata's act has drawn sharp criticism from the opposition. Sujan Chakraborty, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) legislator cited similarities to Nero fiddling as Rome burned. Taking to Twitter, Chakraborty posted images of Bagri Market that was engulfed in flames on Sunday and one of Banerjee playing the accordion and a poster that read "Majerhat Bridge had a fitness certificate, Bagri Market had a No Objection Certificate, who gave these certificates and in return of what?" It must be noted that the song ‘We Shall Overcome’ which became a civil rights anthem in the 1950s onwards, was originally sung by Pete Seeger, Joan Baez and Bruce Springsteen. In India, famous poet Girija Kumar Mathur had composed its translation in Hindi "Hum Honge Kaamyab", which became a popular patriotic song.
On Sunday, Banerjee left for a 12-day trip to Germany and Italy to attract more investments to the state and is likely to return on September 28. She is accompanied by Finance Minister Amit Mitra, Finance Secretary H K Dwivedi and Chief Secretary Malay Dey, left for Frankfurt and Milan at around 9.45 am, official sources said.
According to a report by PTI, Banerjee said she was invited by industrialists, businessmen and the government of the two European countries, who had visited the state during the Bengal Global Business Summit this year. Reports inform that during her visit, Banerjee met Dr Jurgen Ratzinger, managing director, International Business IHK Frankfurt, Dirk Matter, Director IGCC Dusseldorf, Oliver Wack, area manager, Foreign Trade Department, East and South Asia Trade Policy.
