A nine-year-old was rushed to Mangaluru's KMC Hospital on Tuesday after she swallowed a magnet. The child was playing with a toy magnet when it got stuck in her windpipe. She was brought into the hospital with difficulty in breathing. An X-ray report confirmed that a magnet was stuck in her windpipe causing respiratory complications. Dr Jayateertha Joshi, paediatric surgeon shifted the child to the operation theatre to perform a bronchoscope. Procedures were conducted to check any injury or bleeding.

The Times of India quoted Joshi as saying, "We were presented with several challenges while dealing with this case. The chances of an endoscopy failing were high and removing the magnet with forceps was tricky given its smooth surface. After several rounds of discussion with our anaesthesiologist Dr Sunil we realized that removing such a large object could have obstructed the main windpipe (trachea), leading to difficulty in making the child breathe under anaesthesia."

The doctors decided to use a stronger magnet to move the one stuck in her windpipe. Using a bronchoscope to keep a track of the object in the windpipe, they used a magnet to remove it. Joshi added saying, "When it reached the inlet of the windpipe, removal became easy. The child was discharged the next day."
