Google is celebrating International Labour Day with a doodle that will remind you of the important role played by workers across the globe. The purple coloured Labour Day 2018 Google Doodle includes everything from rubber gloves, safety helmets, painting roll-ons, wires, glasses to light torches. It has tried and included everything that showcases works done by labourers.

The labour movement which began in the 1800s and it demanded paid leaves, proper wages and breaks for the workforce. The Internationa Labour Day came into being in 1884 after the steady demand of American Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions for an eight-hour work. Protests were held by workers which resulted in Haymarket Riot of 1886, in which four people were killed and many wounded. Following the incident, the eight-hour workday was sanctioned.

Today, International Workers' Day is viewed as a public holiday in over 80 countries. In India, Labour Day was officially celebrated on May 1, 1923, in Chennai after being initiated by the Labour Kisan Party of Hindustan. The day is also known as Antarrashtriya Shramik Diwas in India. It is known by different names in different states depending on the language. In Hindi, the day is known as Kamgar Din, Kamgar Divas in Marathi and Uzhaipalar Dhinam in Tamil.

Some countries conduct large military parades exhibiting their weapons in support of the government on Labours' Day. The day dedicated to the working class witnesses large-scale celebrations in different parts of the country. Coincidentally Maharashtra Day and Gujarat Day also fall on the same day which commemorates the making of the states after Bombay State was divided on the basis of language.
