Japan's Sumo Wrestling Tournament Starts on a Good Note Despite Controversies on Sexism

Japan's Spring Festival sumo wrestling tournament was held in Tokyo on Monday. Bouts of the game were held in the country amid reports of scandals. The ceremonial tournament was held at a controversial war shrine. This time, the ancient sport seemed unaffected by the negative publicity around it.

Sumo wrestling was mired in scandals for incidents of assault, bullying and accusations of sexism. However, on Monday, the national sport kicked off despite controversies.

As per a Reuters report, it began with foot-stamping ceremonies followed by a traditional chanting. A funny routine explaining the dos and don'ts of sumo wrestling were also held. Sumo wrestlers took part in the Shino ritual before the tournament dedicated to Yasukuni Shrine.

One of the controversial rules of the game forbids women from entering the ring on the ground which is considered sacred. It is believed women pollute the place with their presence.

Sumo wrestling garnered more negativity after female medics who attempted to revive local mayor Ryozo Tatami who had collapsed during a tournament near Kyoto were asked to leave the sumo ring. Japan Sumo Association chairman Hakkaku was forced to apologise for the incident.

The history of sumo, Japan's national sport, can be traced back to more than 1,500 years. It has religious roots with rituals on the same being conducted in Shinto shrines before harvest season. Recently, forward thinkers said that sumo wrestling should be more inclusive. Sumo wrestling will be held at the next Summer Olympics 2020 taking place in Tokyo.
