Last week, people across the world woke up to terrifying news of a series of a volcanic eruption from one of the most active volcanoes on earth at the Italian island of Stromboli. The explosion sent a huge plume into the air, raining rocks down on anyone nearby. It even killed a 35-year-old hike from Sicily. Now dramatic footage has been released online of the event that occurred on July 3, 2019. In the frightening video, you can see the smoke rising more than a mile up in the sky as it is filled with ash. Scared onlookers can be heard saying, “oh my God,” “stay away,” as they witness the eruption. According to media reports, around 1,000 tourists fled the island. During the blast, 30 people threw themselves into the sea for safety following the eruption.

Italy has three other active volcanoes namely, Etna on Sicily, Vesuvius near Naples and Stromboli, which shares the name of the small Sicilian island in the Italian region. According to geologists, Stromboli is also considered as one of the most active volcanoes on the planet and has frequently erupted since 1932. Besides, Stromboli is also a popular tourist attraction and the small population of the island and its economy is based entirely on tourism.
