A Kerala man has initiated conversation on a topic that is among the least talked about in the country. In a Facebook post, Habeeb Anju, a native of Palakkad district in Kerala has written in detail about contraception and why it should not be a topic discussed behind closed doors. Habeeb underwent vasectomy recently for not having any more children after the birth of his second child. In the viral post in Malayalam, he asks why contraception is often considered the woman's job despite tubectomy being a tedious and time-consuming process in comparison.

While tubectomy and vasectomy are both medically advised surgical procedures, it is generally the woman who goes through the process, in couples who opt for family planning. He further explains that he and his wife, Anju had decided that if she had a caesarean delivery, they would go for tubectomy along with it. If not, then they would get a vasectomy done.

Here is the viral Facebook post on vasectomy:

What is Tubectomy?

Tubectomy is a surgical procedure for sterilisation in which a woman's fallopian tubes are clamped or severed and sealed, either of which prevents eggs from reaching the uterus for implantation.

What is Vasectomy?

Vasectomy is a surgical procedure in men where the scrotum’s tubes that carry sperms are blocked or cut as a form of permanent sterilisation.

In the post, he assures how vasectomy, the sterilisation process will not affect ejaculation or cause erectile dysfunction and is far less painful for a man to undergo it compared to a woman who has to go through the process. He writes how getting it done is roughly the same as catching a movie after work.  Talking about the procedure, he says he was on his way back from work and after getting operated, he rode back home, on his own.

While topics related to sexual health are hushed up topics in the country, notes like these not only throw light on the medical advancements but also how a surgery which can be done by either of the partners is generally pushed on the women. The stand by the society on such issues shows the deep-rooted patriarchal mindset which needs to change. We hope this post necessitates the essential talk on the subject and sees required results in the future.

(While that is Habeeb's personal note on vasectomy, we suggest you consult a doctor for an expert opinion and read up on the topic in detail for further understanding.)
