International Tiger Day 2019: Six-Month-Old Cub in Bengaluru's National Park Named After Hima Das

The Bannerghatta Biological Park in Bengaluru organised a special event for International Tiger Day 2019. A few new tigers were released into the safari zone of the park. A 6-month-old cub has been named after Hima Das, the Asian Games Gold medalist.

July 29 marks the celebration of International Tiger Day. The day is being observed globally and aims at creating more awareness about preservation of the wild animal. The Bannerghatta Biological Park in Bengaluru is also celebrating with the day with a special event. A few new tigers were released into the safari zone of the park and a 6-month-old cub will definitely be a highlight among those as it is named after Asian Games gold medalist Hima Das. The ace Indian sprinter brought in her 5th gold medal for the country in July in a 400-metre race in the Czech Republic. The 6-month-old cub Hima will was released along with three other males and five females in the safari region of the BBP on Sunday. To mark the International Tiger Day, they also have a set of other programmes which will focus on understanding this wild species. So the visitors to the zoo will get to learn more about tigers and how they can contribute to the conservation methods. There will also be an exhibition, screening of short movies and other activities throughout the day. As reported in Deccan Herald, the Visitors will also have a chance to make their own tiger handimals as part of the celebration. A statement by Vanashree Vipin Singh, executive director, BBP read, "Tiger plays a vital role in maintaining a balance in the ecosystem. With less than 4,000 tigers left in the wild, due to anthropogenic factors like habitat loss and hunting, it is of utmost importance for the general public to understand how they can save these endangered species." Now visitors can view a total of 12 tigers when they visit the safari here.
