A terrible video of people sitting on a sea turtle has gone viral on social media. The incident has led to social media outrage with people calling out the insensitive people.
Video of a group of Indonesians riding on the back of a sea turtle has enraged social media users. In the video, locals can be seen sitting on a visibly distressed giant sea turtle, expecting it to take him on a ride. The turtle can be seen trying hard to move after people sit on its shell. At a time, even three people sat on leatherback turtle. The video shows them posing for pictures and videos as the amphibian crawls back to the sea. According to UNILAD, locals captured the turtle after it laid eggs on Asukweri beach. Their act is completely against the guidelines that ask people to not trouble mother turtles. At a point in the video, two men and a young child can be seen trying to sit on the turtle's back, with one of them even placing his feet on the sea turtle's head. The leatherback turtle is the world's largest species of turtle which is listed as 'vulnerable' on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species (IUCN.) According to the World Wildlife Fund, while the IUCN lists leatherback turtles as vulnerable, there are subpopulations of these turtles in the Pacific and Southwest Atlantic which are critically endangered. Over the last hundred years, the population of leatherback turtle have dropped significantly, majorly due to intense egg collection and fisheries bycatch.
