In a new move, Indian Railways is focusing more on quality than on quantity of food served during the journey. According to the new approach by the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), the quantity of food given to passengers in Rajdhani and Shatabdi will be reduced. Recommendations from a committee set up to review the menu suggested that 900gm meal should be reduced to 700gm.

Hindustan Times reported that the Railway board was informed by IRCTC about the cut down of the food given to commuters. The quantity of daal will be reduced from 150gm to 120 gm and soup will be discontinued. They will be adding a serving of dry vegetable and boneless chicken. And for those on a long journey, the second meal will be typically a one-bowl meal.

On World Environment Day, the Indian Railways has introduced the new service in 27 trains. You will also witness an improved quality of packaging and wait-staff. They have also introduced biodegradable food packages in Shatabadi and Rajdhani trains.

HT quoted an IRCTC officer as saying, "The price for a meal is stagnant and has not been increased for years, although the price of items we serve has increased drastically. When we approached the Railway Board for a price increase, they allowed us to rationalise the menu instead of increasing the price. We are now taking a host of measure to improve quality of service and food item in trains."

The Indian Railways have been witnessing many changes in the recent past. Most of the ticketing transactions have been made online for the ease of passengers. In a new move, the introduced e-catering services where passengers can get local cuisine through their app. One can also buy fresh Alphonso mangoes from 'Food-on-Track' app.
