In a major blunder, the US tech giant Amazon has been bashed by Indian techies. The e-commerce company landed itself in a controversy after it published an inaccurate map of India that does not include some parts of Jammu and Kashmir. The map was put out in a brochure for Amazon Web Services (AWS) Global Summit, being held in Mumbai on Thursday, May 10. The error resulted in techies boycotting the major event. Dinesh O Bareja, Cyber Security Specialist is the first person to spot the fault in the map and he started an online campaign demanding Amazon to take down the erroneous map without Kashmir and issue a public apology.

“Amazon insults India with a wrong map publicising the Mumbai Summit,” said the campaign led by Bareja. He further informed that the AWS made a phone call and were apologetic for this misrepresentation.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is a subsidiary of Amazon.com that provides on-demand cloud computing platforms to individuals, companies and governments, on a paid subscription basis.

Bareja’s demand was straight as he calls it a national issue and not personal. Below are the highlighted points that Bareja’s online campaign mandates from the US tech giant regarding the goof up:

1. Make a public apology to the nation.

2. Send an email to your international and India mailing list of recipients telling them about the mistake and asking to delete the earlier brochure.

3. Share the message with your other companies Amazon Books etc to take care with the map of the country.

Meanwhile, AWS spokesperson reported that they are taking this issue very seriously and working with the team to ensure that such errors are never repeated. But no official response has came forward by the e-tailer yet. Bareja intense the issue and stressed that the nation waits for an apology for making such a blooper despite having so many Indian employees working with the US tech.

According to the draft Geo-spatial Information Regulation Bill 2016; anyone whose depiction of India on a map does not match the government’s is liable to pay a fine up to Rs. 100 crore and seven years in jail. Such incidents occurred in previous year too when Facebook showed Jammu and Kashmir as a part of China. The social media platform had to apologise for the wrong representation. Al Jazeera, a Qatar owned media company was banned by the Information and Broadcasting Ministry for repeatedly using wrong map of India. On the other hand, the government protested when Twitter showed the geographical location of Kashmir in China and Jammu in Pakistan.
