Indian Ghost Railway Station Begunkodor in West Bengal Is No More Haunted
Begunkodor railway station in West Bengal is no more a haunted place. It was a myth created by the local people which went ahead for decades!
Begunkodor, a local village in West Bengal held the tag of being a haunted railway station. The myth was so strong that the station remained non-operational for 42 years! A group of rationalists have finally managed to break this myth by camping on the station for the entire night with police protection. Apparently, it was the locals who had purposely spread the myth of a woman wandering on the tracks in a white saree at night. It was created to boost ‘ghost tourism’ and loot the tourists by creating a fear among them.
Begunkodor railway station is situated in Purulia district of West Bengal. It was at the top among the Indian Railways list of 10 haunted stations in 1967. The station master here reportedly died after seeing a white saree clad woman and soon the passengers deserted it. The station was shut until 2009, when Mamata Banerjee reopened it during her tenure. But nobody really stayed back till late at this spot. Instead it became famous as a daring thing to do among the youngsters here to spend a night at the railway station.
A nine-member team from rationalist organization Paschim Banga Bigyan Mancha decided to unfold this mystery and camped at the railway station seeking police protection. They were well equipped with torches, digital compasses and cameras too. At around 2 am they even heard peculiar sounds from behind the station building. When they looked there, they saw a group of men making the sounds from behind a bush.
So, whatever, the strangeness was felt at the place was most likely a doing of the locals here. It would be just easier to loot the few adventurous people who visited by creating a fear among them. Joy Biswas, the police superintendent of Purulia said that the night-patrolling in the area has been increased and even awareness is being spread among the people.
After years of believing in the white saree clad woman, Begunkodor can now be off the list of haunted places. It is the locals here who had been prying as ghosts. What is surprising is how the most haunted station in the country was on the basis of myth!
