A 17-year-old differently-abled Dalit boy was beaten up and given electric shocks by upper caste men for allegedly stealing two bottles of cold drink in Mukstar, Punjab. He was also kept in an illegal confinement in a police station for three days without lodging any case against him, as reported by India Today. According to sources, the boy was taken to the police station by the accused men themselves.
The alleged video of the horrific incident shows the boy being tied to a tree during night and being given electric shocks. The accused men threatened to break boy’s knees besides tying him to a motorcycle. “He was brutally tortured and was kept in illegal detention for three days. They accused him of stealing two bottles of cold drink and ghee. We were 50 people who requested them to release him, but they ignored. The boy is disabled, and the allegations are baseless,” said Dharmavir, the boy’s relative. Dharmavir also said that the boy had lost his sheep and while searching for it he tried to drink water from the tap of the upper caste family, he was caught and thrashed.
Muktsar Sadar Police Station sub-inspector refuted the allegations of illegal detention but was speechless when asked why the victim was released from backdoor after the media and social activists stormed the police station. So far, no action has been taken against the accused men who tortured the disabled Dalit boy.
