A team of students from Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee has developed inflatable helmets much required for the Indian two-wheeler drivers. While it a compulsion according to the traffic rules in the country, bikers try their best to avoid it. The inflatable balloons are designed like conventional lids that can be draped around the neck like a collar. This loosened strap will blow into an airbag if the rider collides. It covers the neck and goes up to the skull protecting the face also.

Just like airbags in the cars that lessens the high impact during a crash, these airbags helps in reducing damage to the head in case of an accident. Sarang Nagwanshi, Mohit Siddha and Rajvardhan Singh, the final year Mechanical Engineering students developed the 'inflated helmets' after their internship at (ISRO).

Sarang Nagwanshi, one of the inventors told Economic Times, "We got the idea of the inflatable helmet while we were working on inflatable space antenna at ISRO during our internship. As this helmet is being developed for the first time in India we got very limited help from any external source and our learning curve was very steep. The results obtained are very encouraging and we are working towards converting this idea into a reality." The work was completed under the guidance of associate professor Sanjay H Upadhyay

These helmets can be easily folded and kept in a small bag as it is filled with air. It is also affordable as the sensors used in the prototype are cheaper. They are made of heat resistant and a synthetic fibre called 'Kevlar' which is also used in making bullet-proof jackets. The helmet has been designed to act in less than 100 milliseconds by analysing accelerations through multiple sensors fitted in it.
