Nashik, March 19: Nashik on Sunday witnessed a rare incident at a wedding when 700 guests signed pledge to donate their organs. The newlyweds decided to make their wedding day memorable by doing something for the society and indeed they did. Also, 60 others donated blood on the occasion. The couple, Varsha Pagar, assistant provident fund commissioner, and Swapnil Kothawade, assistant commissioner (income tax), both from Nashik, posted out of Maharashtra was showing their concern their environment and society by doing so. Without no drums or fanfare, the couple tried and did their bit for the future.

The Times of India quoted Varsha as saying, "Both my husband and I want to donate our organs. We thought our wedding ceremony would be the right occasion to pledge to do so as there would be a lot of guests and it would help create awareness for organ donation." Meanwhile, social worker Laxman Jamkar said, "The response of the guests was enthusiastic. We collected 62 bags of blood during the ceremony." The couple share a common interest in social work.

Similarly, showing concern for the environment, last year, a Kerala couple got marriage promoting 'Go Green' message. At the eco-friendly wedding, plastic and disposable cups were displaced with environment friendly products. In another incident, a Pune couple planted 101 saplings to celebrate the birth of their daughter. They also donated 50 saplings to students of a local school.

The concept of eco-friendly weddings has caught quite a trend in India. In the recent past many concerned couples have taken the good step in doing good for the environment and society.
