A thought too far fetched, but some people have already booked their spots on the earth's satellite moon. Several people have purchased a piece of the lunar land. But is it really easy to buy a piece of moon? How are people able to buy a piece of earth's satellite? A woman in Pune has got the issue in headlines as she realised she has been fooled in the name of buying a piece of land on the moon. Radhika Date-Waikar from Pune claims she bought a piece of the lunar land for Rs 50,000 in the year 2005.
Radhika saw an advertisement on TV about buying a piece of land on the moon and got in touch with the person. The person posed as a representative from Lunar Foundation, presented the moon as a well-established place for humans, with a lot of water and she instantly agreed to pay. Today she has an address of her plot on the moon and she is looking off to sell it because she needs money for her son's education! When she wanted to check up on the status of the land and more about it, she contacted the organisation but got no response. How to Buy Land on Moon?
Any time you read up about owning up land on the moon, you'd want to know the procedure at least. Well, to sum it up it is very complicated. Since no country owns the moon, it is impossible for anyone to own the lunar land. Private ownership of a part of the moon is almost impossible. So while multiple nations are trying their best to claim land and hope to build a village on the moon, it is not as easy. The Outer Space Treaty which has been signed by 104 countries has been in effect since the year 1967. It states, 'Outer space, including the moon and other celestial bodies, is not subject to national appropriation by claim of sovereignty, by means of use or occupation, or by any other means.' But due to some loopholes in here, it doesn't specifically forbid someone from owning land on the moon. Even if you own a piece of moon, it is more likely just a piece of paper which states so and no nation which has signed the treaty will accept your claim.
So while a quick search may give you some provisions of buying land on the moon, it will just be an expensive piece of paper. It is impossible for anyone to legally claim a piece of lunar land. Who All Own a Land on The Moon?
Although it is not actually possible to own a piece of land, there are a few people who have their names in the lunar registry. Bollywood King Khan, Shah Rukh Khan apparently has his name on the list. His die-hard fan from Australia buys him a small piece of lunar land on his birthday every year! An entrepreneur from Hyderabad was in news for buying land on the moon. In the year 2005, he made it to the headlines for spending $140 to own a plot on the moon. It was a risk he could afford taking but it hasn't been official ownership. The people who sold him the land were put behind bars in Europe.
Another Bollywood actor, Sushant Singh Rajput is also said to own a piece of lunar land. The actor has bought a piece of lunar land on the far side of the Moon, in a region called the Mare Muscoviense. The actor bought the property from the International Lunar Lands Registry, but it still does not account to official ownership because of the treaty.
