The traffic rules in our country are compromised on most of the times, be it the basic like following the signal. The traffic situation in the city of Mumbai is never-ending. And it is best to know all the traffic rules to the tee. A man from Mumbai had to pay Rs. 2000, because he gave a lift to a stranger! Did you know giving a lift to a stranger is against the law? Nitin Nair who happened to help a stranger, a senior citizen in time of a heavy downpour had his license taken away by the traffic police. The traffic law he learnt, shows that giving a lift to strangers in private vehicles is illegal, meaning carpooling is also illegal.
Nitin Nair wrote a huge post on Facebook, describing the entire incident. He was travelling towards his office and offered to help an elderly man near Airoli. Soon after a traffic police asked for his license and gave him a receipt and on asking the reason he was told, "It is illegal to give a lift to unknown people.” His license was taken and he had to head to the police station, who then directed him to go to a court to get it. Nitin was charged under the section 66/192. To confirm that the police were not fooling around, he asked a lawyer friend of his who told him it was indeed illegal to give a lift to an unknown person in a private vehicle.
Take a look at Nitin Nair's Facebook post:
This law which refrains from giving a lift to strangers in private vehicles, then also makes carpooling illegal. A lot of people who commute by their private vehicles, choose to drop someone at a location on the way and the system has been working well for many office goers. Over time the strangers may become known people but the concept of carpooling becomes illegal straightaway under the law. Were you aware of the existence of such a traffic law? What do you think about this one?
