A 9-year-old girl student was told not to wear a tank top in school as it "distract boys". The girl was allegedly told to cover her shoulders. The mother of the child was outraged and they protested wearing "right to bare shoulders" tees!
In a day and time when we talk of body positivity and encouraging women to be comfortable in whatever they wear, a 9-year-old's body-shaming case in Florida school has left everyone enraged. A 9-year-old girl student was told not to wear a tank top in school as it "distract boys". The girl was allegedly told to cover her shoulders. The mother of the child was outraged and they protested wearing "right to bare shoulders" tees! Florida Girl Goes to School Without Wearing a Bra, Asked to Cover Nipples With Band-Aids.
The incident took place at the Callahan Intermediate School at Nassau County in Florida. The child was told to cover up because she wore a tank top at school. The mother Kate Darrow was outraged with the reasoning that was given. Tank tops were told to distract males! She told in a report to Action News Jax, "They had her wear a hoodie to cover up. Right there, I knew that that was an issue...It's 2019 and that's not something I want my daughter to be taught." While the mother was clearly enraged, they decided to make their opinion heard. She and her husband agreed that the school's dress code was too outdated. She gathered a few other friends, classmates of her daughter and took a peaceful protest approach. They came up with Tshirts for girls that read "Right to bare shoulders," and for the boys' that said, "Real men aren't distracted by shoulders."
After the protest, Darrow is hoping that the school would rethink about their dress code. "It’s bringing the wrong idea to these girls that they are responsible for what a boy does," she said. The school's website mentions in its dress code that all students must wear full cover shirts of blouses. The parents mentioned to Yahoo Lifestyle that they have met with the admins of the school who have said they will look into the matter. Kate said they hope to see the change in the dress code soon. But it is indeed sad, that little girls are being targetted for body shaming and in a way that they can be blamed later.
