Fact Check: Truth About Viral Video Being Circulated on WhatsApp as Lions Roaming in Thane Godhbunder Road

Mumbai, September 13: Earlier this year, there was news of a leopard having been spotted at a mall in Thane. It spread fear and panic among the people staying nearby after the video of the incident went viral on social media. However, now another video is being circulated on WhatsApp in which the footage shows a pride of lions roaming in the streets at night.  The WhatsApp forward claims that the video has been shot at 1:56 am at Ghodbunder Road in Thane on September 11. We did a fact check and found that the video was indeed recent, but the information that it was shot in Thane was incorrect. The footage is from a video that went viral this week itself, which showed pride of lions roaming around in a city near Girnar mountains in the Junagadh district of Gujarat. According to a video tweeted by a Twitter user, seven lions were seen walking down the street late at night. For a user who has not seen the Girnar video, it will be very difficult to make out that the information provided is wrong. Social media is often filled with interesting forwards, memes and videos. We all are members of various groups and, therefore, we get bombarded with a lot of information, some of which is not true. The authenticity of any video or forward shared on social media should always be cross-checked before sharing the same with others, in an attempt to curb the spread of fake news.
