Keeping the fun-fact aside, here’s why people in Europe observe the Europe Day on May 9 every year. Europe Day, or Schuman Day as it is alternatively called, is observed by the European Union in commemoration of the 1950 Schuman Declaration. It is considered equivalent to a ‘national day’ in the European Union (EU).

In the year 1950, the Schuman Declaration proposed to place French & German production of Coal & Steel under one umbrella. This one (common) high authority became the foundation for what today we all know as European Union. Hence, it is celebrated as Europe Day. The Schuman Declaration was a statement prepared by then France’s Foreign Minister – Robert Schuman. Hence the day is also celebrated as Schuman Day!
