Google is celebrating the 373rd birthday of Venetian philosopher Elena Cornaro Piscopia with a doodle. Born on June 5, 1646, Elena was among the first women to receive an academic degree from a university. She was also the first woman in the world to receive a PhD degree. The Google doodle sees Elena Piscopia in the middle reading a book with a bookshelf at the back. The word Google is blended in the bookshelf and the book in her hand. Elena Lucrezia Cornaro Piscopia was from a noble descent. She was the third child of Gianbattista Cornaro-Piscopia. Her father Giovanni Battista was a nobleman. At the age of 7, she started taking lessons in Greek and Latin. She then also mastered languages like French, Spanish, and Hebrew. Other than the languages, she also studied the subjects of mathematics, astronomy, philosophy, music, and theology.
Elena Piscopia had dedicated a major part of her life studying and thus was able to achieve great feats. She was a part of many scholarly societies too, which gave her the fame of an intellectual. She went on to become a mathematics lecturer at the University of Padua. Other than gaining knowledge constantly, she was an expert musician. She died at Padua in 1684 of tuberculosis.
