Google is observing Earth Day 2018 with a nature-friendly doodle. International Mother Earth Day is observed on April 22 globally to create awareness about the importance of protecting nature. This annual Earth Day, Google has partnered with Ethologist, conservationist, activist, and animal-lover Dr Jane Goodall who has dedicated her life to studying and protecting the environment. She has been a lover of nature since childhood and continues to be one at the age of 84. The Earth Day doodle also comes with a personal message from Goodall where she talks about her relationship with nature.
Earth Day 2018 theme is 'End Plastic Pollution' highlighting the alarming effect of using plastic extensively on Mother Nature. From seas, oceans, forest, dry land, animals, birds and humans themselves face the dire consequences of plastic usage.
The aim of International Mother Earth Day is to promote global harmony with nature. According to the United Nations, 'International Mother Earth Day is celebrated to remind each of us that the Earth and its ecosystems provide us with life and sustenance'. Earth day aims 'to achieve a just balance among the economic, social, and environmental needs of present and future generations'.

The Earth Day came into being in 2009 when the General Assembly decided to add an observance in achieving the balance between economic, social and environmental needs of current and future generations. With Earth Day already being celebrated on the same day in many countries, the UN decided to include International Mother Earth Day on April 22.
