President Donald Trump may be the darling of the alt-right in the US of A. But the man certainly does not understand that women are people. It’s 2019 and the head of state of the world’s most powerful country wears his chauvinism on his sleeve with pride. A few days ago, the US prez spoke about conservative commentator Candace Owens’ beauty, adding he’s not “allowed to say it (that she’s beautiful)” due to the “MeToo generation.” He said: “Under the ‘MeToo’ generation we’re not allowed to say it. So all of you young brilliant guys, never, ever call a woman beautiful, please. You’re not allowed to do it. Trump was speaking at the Young Black Leadership Summit at the White House when he made a comment. We commiserate with him over having to bite his tongue every time he feels the urge to “compliment” a beautiful woman. Remember the “Grab em by the p***y” comment? That’s just one among his many gems. Carly Fiorina was Trump’s fellow GOP candidate and he had every reason to run her down. But by judging her for her looks? That’s anything but classy.

Trump alluded to ex-US president Bill Clinton’s infidelity by making it seem somehow it was wife Hillary’s fault. He also used the B-word to talk about his political opponent. Very classy.

There’s perhaps no head of state in recent times who has had such disregard for propriety. Even as attitudes towards sexism and gender discrimination are changing for the better, it undoubtedly ill behoves the head of the most powerful country in the world to treat women like objects. A generation of men is watching and learning. And whether he likes it or not, he had better watch his tongue.
