Did you also grow up hearing that hard work pays off? Then this incident may want you to re-think if it really does. A French baker is facing the law for not taking offs. He, in fact, got fined 3,000 Euro (USD 3,700) for not taking a single leave. Cédric Vaivre, was open every day during the summer of 2017 to serve tourists. He runs the only bakery in Lusigny-sur-Barse in north-east France, which is about 120 miles south-east of Paris. As his bakery is located in a location that attracts tourists in summer, he opened on every day to meet the demands.

Now, loyal customers in the town of Lusigny-sur-Barse have launched a petition in support of Cédric Vaivre and his Boulangerie du Lac. And the 41-year-old baker has received over 2,000 signatures. However, no change in the law is proposed and Vaivre has been asked to pay the fine. However, after the fine was levied by employment authority officials, Vaivre reportedly refused to pay the fine with the local mayor supporting him.

In France, everyone is required to take a day off per week.  In January 2017, France passed a law that gives workers the right to limit their out-of-office and after-hours correspondence. The country also has a 35-hour work week since 2000 while some rules have been softened and certain industries are granted special exceptions.

Under the local employment law, two separate regulations from 1994 and 2000 require bakers' shops to close once a week while exceptions are granted in specific cases. In 2017, the employers' bakers union in Aube asked over 120 local businesses if they wanted to maintain the law which is the place. Reportedly, the majority said they wanted to maintain the rule that lets the have a day off.
