DC Cancels Comic Book 'Second Coming' That Portrays Jesus Christ As Superhero Sun-Man's Sidekick Following Backlash
'Second Coming' was to release on March 6 under DC Vertigo, a section of DC that publishes adult or graphic content.
DC has cancelled the release of their comic book titled 'Second Coming' featuring Jesus Christ after backlash from Christians. Certain sections of believers of the faith called the book's content "blasphemous". According to DC Comics, the 32-page comic is centred around Jesus returning to Earth and to complete the "most holy mission by God" and "learn what it takes to be the true messiah of mankind", while being the sidekick of a superhero named Sun-Man.
Following the backlash, writers of the comic, Mark Russell and artist Richard Pace tweeted saying that's release has been cancelled. 'Second Coming' was to release on March 6 under DC Vertigo, a section of DC that publishes adult or graphic content. Russell tweeted saying, "My goal is always to write the best books I can about things I have a deep personal attachment to. Publishers have goals of their own. Sometimes our goals complement each other's, sometimes they don't. It's okay to admit it when they don't and go separate ways." Following the uproar, an online petition defending religious beliefs was filed on CitizenGo. It was signed by over 2.3 lakh people who said that the comic book was "inappropriate" and portrayed Jesus as a "clueless superhero sidekick". The initiative began after Russell in an interview said that Christ was sent back to Earth because "God was so upset with Jesus' performance the first time" that he kept him locked away.
The petition states, "Can you imagine the media and political uproar if DC Comics was altering and poking fun at the story of Muhammad... or Buddha. This blasphemous content should not be tolerated. Jesus Christ is the Son of God. His story should not be ridiculed for the sake of selling comic books."
