An 8-year-old girl was raped, her throat was slit and she was left to die in Mandsaur of Madhya Pradesh by allegedly a 20-year-old. A minor girl was allegedly raped by a friend in south Delhi's Malviya Nagar area. A 28-year-old mentally retarded woman was allegedly raped repeatedly and made pregnant by a man in Odisha. A 20-year-old woman was allegedly raped by a taxi driver near the airport in Vasco town in Goa.

These are headlines of just the past two days. And if each one of these doesn’t worry you, make you sick, make you angry and make you want to shout out loud for the safety of women and children in India, then, my friend, you are not really talking about crime against women in those Facebook and Twitter posts.

I have been astonished by the reactions on the social media on rape cases one after the other. If the families of the victims of these crimes sit down and see the selective aggression against these heinous crimes against women and children, trust me, they would cry even louder at what has been made out of the pain of their children.

My timeline over the past few days has been flooded with posts about the brutal rape of an 8-year-old in Mandsaur. The child is now battling for life in a hospital. But none of those posts are about praying for her life, condemning the act or seeking action. The posts are questioning, "where is the mombatti gang now”, they are targeting female actors asking them as to why they are not expressing their anger on the social media now as they did when the rape and murder of an eight-year-old in Kathua hit the media. These are also the same people who had not expressed any anger over that same Kathua case. These are also the same people, who may not even be aware of the other rape cases mentioned above and would blame the media for not covering them, while they are all out as news reports.

At the same time, many who had expressed anger over the Kathua rape and murder case with a series of social media posts, haven’t condemned any of the above cases. Are we to believe that these rapes of women and children will be condemned only when the accused belong to a particular religion? We as a society are failing ourselves and should hang our heads in shame for not just this selective anger based on political ideologies and religion, but also because there seems to be no end to such crimes against women and children in our country.

Religion and politics do not even matter here. What matters is a woman and a child has been raped, has been killed. It is shameful, shocking, ridiculous and much more. The most extreme action should be taken against the culprits in each of these cases.

What are we achieving out of ridiculing another woman on the social media asking her where she is now? What are we becoming when we call a female actor names on the social media while we share a post about an 8-year-old’s rape? Morality has gone down the drain. Don’t tell me you care about women if these are the kinds of posts you have to share on the social media. You don’t. You just don’t care about the woman or the child. All you care about is what the religion of the person accused was. All you care about is whether that accused shares a political party’s ideology or not. That a crime has happened in our country against a woman or a girl child is not even a consideration for you.

Do you really care? Let’s do this then. This day onwards, share and express anger over every single rape story that you come across, or speak about none of them at all. Take out that candle light march for every case of crime against women and children in India. Call for action on each of those cases. Only then can we pressure those in power to take strict steps to make our women safer, to make our girl child breathe free. Once that has been achieved, let’s then tell the world and those survey makers that our India welcomes women, it’s safe for them. That culprit is a rapist, who has no religion, no political ideology. Let’s be angry, every single time.
