The commerce ministry has suggested the government to restrict the number of tax-free foreign liquor and cigarettes purchased from duty-free shops. The idea is to control the import of non-essential goods into the country. The purchase of cigarettes is likely to be prohibited totally. While these recommendations will be unveiled by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on February 1, people are definitely not happy. As per the current norms, inbound international passengers are allowed to buy two litres of alcohol and a carton of cigarette from these shops. The limit of just one bottle of liquor has been followed by countries such as the United States, China, South Korea and Singapore. Meanwhile, the commerce ministry has also suggested an increase in customs duty on several products such as paper, footwear, rubber items and toys to promote "Make in India", and boost their manufacturing growth, according to officials.
