Zara has an amazing ‘outfit’ for ladies who live and breath fashion. It is priced just around Rs 5000 - something the brand loyalists will not mind spending on their latest ‘creation’ – after all, it is Zara. So, what is this new dress social media is going berserk over and cannot get over it? It is ‘Check Mini Skirt’ found under skirts for women. Fair enough. However, as soon as you see the picture, you will utter in disbelief as it is lungi – yes, the same dressing item your father has been wearing since forever. Bhai, same Lungi Dance wala lungi!
It is no surprise that traditional Indian fashion is gaining international recognition as well as acceptance. Be it mehandi or bindi, jewellery or outfits, West is welcoming the Indian elements in their day-to-day life. So, when global retailer Zara put up pictures of their new outfit, the internet just could not keep calm. Because the clothing item even with a fancy description 'flowing skirt with draped detail in the front, slit detail at the hem,' could not convince netizens to think beyond its humble inspiration. What seemed even more outlandish about these ‘lungi doppelgangers’ was their high prices.
Zara put up their ‘check mini skirt’ aka ‘lungi’ for sale on their UK website priced at 69.9 pounds or Rs 6250. Not very far behind the UK pricing, the global retailer is selling these outfits for Rs 4990 on their Indian site. It is bizarre because the plain-Jane desi lungi is sold in India for anything between 100 to 300. And unlike the fashion e-commerce giant’s limited colour options, lungis in our country are available in multiple colours.
Probably, the only lungi which is more expensive to than Zara’s is South African Lungi Ngidi. The young South African pacer has been bought by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for Rs 50 lakhs for the forthcoming 11th edition of Indian Premier League. If you think this was the worst PJ you have heard on Zara selling lungi news, then you are absolutely wrong as Twitterati had a field day. Here’s a look at some of the best reactions from the buzzing Twitterverse.

Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone had already shown how pretty girls can look donning lungis in her 2013 film Chennai Express. Do not be surprised if you see other actresses especially B-town’s true-blue fashionista Sonam Kapoor make grand appearances tying a lungi. The 32-year-old is known for her bold sartorial choices and it would be lovely to see Sonam and others wear lungi oops ‘check mini skirt’!
