The month of October is observed as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Also referred to as the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, its an annual international health campaign aimed at spreading awareness about the disease and raising funds for research. A pink ribbon is used to symbolise breast cancer. On the first day of the month, the White House turned into a Pink house, with a bright shade of the colour. This has been a yearly tradition that has been followed since 2008 when the former first lady Laura Bush turned on the pink lights for the first time for the cause. Pictures and videos of the White House turning pink were shared online. People on the internet are also sharing these pictures again to raise more awareness about breast cancer. Other than the White House, several other iconic buildings in the country are also illuminated in the symbolic colour pink. Many organisations also arrange activities like walks, runs and races to raise awareness. The money raised is either given to charities working for the cause or donated towards related research purposes.
As per the World Health Organization, about 1.38 million new cases and 458,000 deaths from breast cancer come up each year. The statistics about the number of cases seem scary. The National Breast Cancer Foundation also states that every two minutes, a woman is diagnosed with the disease. It is the second most common form of cancer in women in the US.
