Brat Summer Trend Explained
Around last month, British singer and songwriter Charli XCX released her album titled Brat, with the trending neon green or slime green colour as the album’s theme. She then tweeted, 'Kamala Is Brat,' referring to the US Vice President, who had just launched her presidential campaign after US President Joe Biden decided not to run for re-election. Several netizens took to various social media platforms to make memes on Brat Kamala. In a bid to get votes from the youth and young voters, Kamala Harris chose to embrace the trend and even made her social media handle to the same neon green colour for a while before taking it down. This officially kickstarted the trend, which helped market Charli’s album and started the brat aesthetic. Charli says that the word brat does not refer to a name. Instead, it refers to a lifestyle that has been inspired by rave culture and noughties excess. When explaining what an archetypical brat girl is like, she says that she likes to party; she is a little messy; and even though she may say dumb things or have a breakdown, she will pick herself up. Charli specifically chose the specific shade of green since it represents the crash that comes with hangovers as well as the highs that come after a long night out. Hence, the brat summer trend encourages people to take risks, be bold, embrace themselves and be uncomfortable. The main focus of Brat is being imperfect, edgy, messy, carefree, bold, and confident, as opposed to poised, correct, polished, and clean.
